This is a high quality, Maker marked, Antique sterling silver top pocket Whiskey / Spirits flask, with a 3-dimensional hand-blown cross diamond pattern cut crystal bottle with a hallmarked mushroom shaped sterling cap and bayonet style twist top silver flask. This piece has Hallmark markings: the Maker Mark “J.G&S”, the Lion mark for sterling silver, the date mark “b” for the year 1897, and the city mark of a jaguar head for London. The Maker mark is the earliest mark used by John Grinsell & Son, Victoria Works, St George's, Birmingham, registered Nov 1892 and used 1892-1904. Note that the flask was manufactured in Birmingham and sold in the primary London market, and thus, bears the London city assay mark and date mark that are correct. Underneath the stamped silver hallmarks are a very lightly pin scratched numbers, “293-13 SP/C” that can be seen with a loupe. The collar is stamped with the number 18184.
This is a heavy duty, thick piece of hand-blown cut crystal small flask, 3 7/8” tall x 2 7/8” wide x 1” thick and is heavy for its size at a hefty 5.3 ounces or 152 grams. This flask is a desirous small pocket flask size, intended as a carrying flask and can easily be carried in a jacket, pocket or purse. The round shaped hand cut crystal glass is hand blown into a mold and is clear inside. The sides of the flask have beveled cut diamonds to create an eye appealing pattern. The bottom has a small diamond shape ground flat that allows the flask to stand upright. The silver mushroom top has no dings or dents and has the original cork insert and appears to be in unused condition. The mushroom shaped domed silver bayonet style twist cap has a hand engraved animal motif of a coat of arms, which suggests this was a presentation piece. Note the silver of the mouthpiece top is silver covered, eliminating any sharp edges that would be an issue when using this as a nipper flask. The cap secures the top to the flask securely and appears it would hold liquid if used; but I have not tested it. This handsome, eye appealing, desirous small pocket size hand blown and hand cut crystal flask was crafted by Master glass artisans. Almost all flasks from this period show use, but this piece shows little to no use overall, and remains in mint condition; especially considering its extreme 125 years of age. This would be perfect for any Whiskey, Spirits, Nipper flask collection, gambling, sportsman, hunter, outdoors man or sports fan; and can still be used by any gentleman, or use as a gift, decorator piece in any Man cave, office, or den.
